ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday reserved the verdict of the disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) case after hearing the arguments.
The case was heard by a 5-member bench comprising Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata BAndial, Justice Ijaz ul-Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah.
During the hearing, Chief Justice asked if a person could contest the election after being disqualified once. To this, Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali responded that the court must decide the tenure of the disqualification in each case.
He added that in the current situation, the disqualification would continue unless some legislation is passed by the parliament or a court judgment is issued affecting the end of the disqualification. “The length of the disqualification period under Article 62(1)(f) has not been determined in the constitution”, he said.
Justice Ijza ul-Ahsan commented that the disqualification could not be over unless the stain of charge remains.
The court reserved the verdict after the arguments. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) former secretary general Jahangir Tareen are two of the recent political heavyweights recently disqualified by SC under Article 62(1)(f) of the constitution.
